Legal Name vs. Display Name
It's important to understand the difference between your display name and legal name on dub:
- Display Name: The name shown to other users on the platform (can be updated directly in your profile settings)
- Legal Name: The name associated with your dub account for tax reporting and regulatory purposes
When to Request a Legal Name Change
You should request a legal name change on your dub account if:
- You've legally changed your name through marriage
- You've legally changed your name through a court order
- Your legal name was entered incorrectly during account setup
- You've changed your name for other legal reasons
Legal Name Change Process
Step 1: Submit Your Request
Fill out a Support Request Form under the "Account Maintenance" topic. In your support request, please include:
- Your current legal name on file
- The new legal name you wish to update to
- The reason for the name change (marriage, court order, correction, etc.)
Step 2: Submit Verification Documentation
Once your request is received, you'll be provided with a secure link to upload verification documents.
Required documentation includes:
- A valid government-issued photo ID showing your updated legal name (driver's license, passport, state ID)
- Legal documentation supporting the name change, such as:
- Marriage certificate
- Court order for name change
- Divorce decree (if returning to a previous name)
- Updated Social Security card
All documents must be current, clear, legible, and unaltered. For your protection, dub partners with Zendesk, a platform that safeguards your information with enterprise-grade encryption and is protected by multiple security certifications, including SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001.
Step 3: Verification Review
Once we receive your documentation:
- Our compliance team will review your submission (typically with 24 hours)
- After verification, we will update your account with the new address
- You'll receive a confirmation email when the update is complete
Important Tax Considerations
Updating your legal name on your dub account is essential for accurate tax reporting. Please note:
- If you change your name with dub but not with the IRS, you may encounter issues with tax document matching
- We recommend updating your name with the Social Security Administration before or at the same time as updating with dub
- Tax forms for the current year will reflect the name on file as of December 31st
